Anyone else still obsessed with the cactus trend? I, Kara, can’t seem to get enough cacti, but that may have something to do with the fact that I live in Texas and cacti are everywhere here! These DIY clay cactus candle holders are simple to make and they give me another way to add a non-prickly cactus to my home. I currently have them displayed on the shelf in my built-ins, but I have a feeling I will be making a few more to create a centerpiece on my dining table. How cute would they be all lined up in the center of the table? Cactus themed dinner party anyone?!

Step One: Grab a large piece of clay and begin to mold it into cactus shapes. Once you have a rough outline of your cactus, dip your finger in a bit of water and use it to smooth out the clay and join the pieces together.

Step Two: Use a pencil to create a hole in the top of the cactus for the candle. I just inserted the pencil tip and moved it around in a circle stretching the clay until the hole was approximately 3/4″ in diameter and 1.5″ deep. Once you have your hole, sit your clay aside and let dry for two days.

Step Three: Paint your cacti with the green acrylic craft paint and let dry. Then use the gold paint pen to add the spines.

Now how simple was that?! And can we talk about the gold spines and details? It’s crazy how a simple addition of the gold makes these so much more polished looking even though it is just painted kid’s clay. If cacti aren’t your thing (and why not?!), you can easily adapt this tutorial to create any shaped candle holder you like. Just don’t forget to add the gold detailing to whatever you create for that extra special touch. Now go craft your hearts out and be sure to share your version with us! xo. Kara
