Come make some DIY heart cake toppers to celebrate our 3rd blog birthday!

Guess what? I’ve been so preoccupied with Easter festivities and baby prep lately that I almost forgot I have an upcoming blog birthday!

Make and Tell quietly turns 3 tomorrow, which for me is both shocking and completely unsurprising at the same time. On the one hand, I can’t quite believe I’ve managed to keep a website up and running for this long (haha that totally makes me sound like I have commitment issues). But on the other hand, this blog is so much a part of me now that I feel like I’ve been crafting here forever and I always will.

Most of all though, as we approach the 3 year mark, I’m just really grateful that you’ve chosen to share this space with me. This journey is so much more enjoyable with you along for the ride – you guys are the best group of online friends a gal could ever ask for.

Okay, I’ll stop with the soppy sentiments now and get to the fun stuff (and by that, I mean sugar of course). In true Make and Tell style, it wouldn’t be a celebration without a healthy serving of sweet treats and a colourful DIY, so I made up these heart cake toppers to mark the occasion!

If you don’t have an upcoming birthday to use as an excuse to show off these pretty hearts, they could just as easily be given to your mum to spoil her on Mother’s Day. Best of all, they’re super easy to make. So get out that rainbow cord and let’s begin!

Materials

Step 1

Cut a length of jewellery wire and wrap it around the outside of your cookie cutter to form a heart shape.

Step 2

Twist the ends together to hold the heart shape in place, making sure you leave enough wire to insert into your cake.

Step 3

Holding one end of your rainbow cord in one hand, start wrapping the rest of the cord all the way around the wire heart with your other hand. As you wrap, the cord will go through several colours, to create a rainbow.

Step 4

Once you’ve completely covered your heart in cord, tie the loose ends together in a knot.

Step 5

Then seal the knot with a dab of glue to ensure the cord doesn’t unravel and cut off the excess.

Once you’ve made a bunch, all that’s left to do is dress up your cakes in lots of lovely rainbow colours!

Feeling creative? You could totally mix things up to suit the theme and style of your next party. Use cookie cutters in different shapes or cord in other colours to make up gold stars, pink flowers, blue clouds or whatever works best for your upcoming celebrations!
