Along with marbling, I have been playing around with wool roving after being introduced to it by my friend Vicki Howell of The Knit Show. I never knew that I was missing out on such a fun craft material! While I have some actual felting projects lined up for most of the roving I purchased, I had some left over to craft with. After finding this cute gold basket at Home Goods, I knew that I could easily give it a rainbow makeover with my extra roving. While it isn’t technically weaving in the traditional sense, this DIY rainbow roving woven basket does take a little bit of weaving action and is oh so cute filled with disco balls.
Roving in a rainbow of colors (I purchased mine here)
Yep! Only two supplies! And yes, it is as simple as weaving the colors of roving in and out of the wire lines in the basket. Just alternate the pattern for each color. For example, for the red I would go over – under – over. So for the pink I would go under-over-under to vary up the weave.
My basket was fairly shallow, so I only needed 8 rows of weaving, and went with a different color for each row. But if you use a taller basket, you may need to do two or three lines of each color. When you get to the end of each color. Just tie the ends together and tuck inside the basket and cut off any extra roving.
Then you are ready to fill your basket with anything you want! Craft supplies, disco balls, or fresh fruit all would look cute! Plus, if rainbows aren’t your thing, you can easily do this project with all one color or make your own pattern with your idea of the perfect colors! Now go get to weaving!
