Get ready to soak up the sun in Set Free My Gypsy Soul’s fabulous Pink Ombré Beach Cover up!

Kimono SFMGS crochet

Summer is here! Whether you’re off to the beach at home or abroad, or just soaking up the sun and balmy summer air in your garden, this quick and easy ombre beach cover up kimono made using the gorgeous new Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran yarn is the perfect project to try out the ‘no beginning chain’ with!

So, whilst I am always super-excited to start a new project… often that very first foundation chain can be a little tedious especially on a very large project such as a blanket. The ‘no beginning chain’ method is a quick, fun and easy way to start a piece and gives your work both a lovely neat edge with even tension across, and eliminates a lot of that pesky counting!

By making loops using chains and a regular crochet stitch, the no beginning chain is just perfect for shell stitch patterns and you can work your first row of stitches directly into those loops rather than into the chains themselves.

MAKE 2 ALIKE

No beginning chain steps

The no beginning chain is a row of loops made using chains and a crochet stitch of the same length as your chain. To make a triple treble crochet, you make your stitch just like a regular treble, but wrap your yarn over your hook 3 times in total before inserting your hook and pulling through. To complete the stitch, draw through 2 loops a total of 4 times.

No Beginning Chain: With yarn A, slipknot and ch5. Ttc into 5th ch from hook.

Repeat [ch5, ttc into 5th ch from hook] 12 times. Ch3.
no beginning chain steps

Once your first loop is made, simply chain 5 again and repeat until your no beginning chain is the desired length. In this pattern, each loop is 1 inch.

shell and v stitch crochet

When your no beginning chain is the desired length, you can begin working your stitches directly into those fun little loops. This pattern uses a Shell and V stitch variant with a quick and easy 2-row repeat. By alternating the colour changes, it creates a pretty ombre effect across your work.
