Kate Eastwood teaches how to make these soft, cool cotton summer shoes that will have even the smallest of feet looking as pretty as a picture. Each pair takes less than one ball of yarn, so a pair in every colour seems perfectly acceptable!

For the neutral coloured shoes I used 1 ball of Rowan Cotton Glace in the shade 730 and I used 1 x ball of the same yarn in shade 725 for the contrast edging. This tutorial is written using UK crochet terms.

Rowan Cotton Glace

I made one pair in this yarn using a size 3mm hook and the finished measurements were: 9cm long, 4cm wide at the heel and 5cm wide at the toe. This size is approx. newborn.

I then made a second pair in the Rowan yarn and worked with a 3.5mm hook. The finished measurements were: 10cm long, 5cm wide at the heel and 6cm wide at the toe. This size is approx. 0 to 3 months.

For the pink pair I used 1 x ball of Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK in Bubblegum Pink and I worked with a 3.5mm hook. The finished measurements were: 10cm long, 5cm wide at the heel and 6cm wide at the toe. This size is approx. 0 to 3 months.

I designed the shoes to be nice and roomy for wriggly toes but fitted enough so that they do not slip off. The little ankle strap is fastened with a popper.

For the flowers I used some very small amounts of 4 ply yarn and 2mm hook.

To make the sole of the shoe:

Round 1: Make a chain of 16.

Starting in the second chain from the hook work 14 HTR along the chain. In to the next chain work 3 HTR.

You are now going to work 13 HTR back down the other side of the chain.30 sts. Sl St to join.

Round 2:  Chain 2 and work a HTR in to the same stitch. Work 14 HTR followed by 2 HTR in to each of the next 3 stitches. Then carry on round and work 12 HTR and 2 HTR in to the last stitch. Sl St to join. 35 sts.

Round 3: Chain 2 and work a HTR in to the same stitch. Work 5 HTR, 5 DC and 3 HTR. Work 2 HTR in to the next stitch followed by 2 TR in to each of the next 5 sts. Work 2 HTR in to the next stitch followed by 3 HTR, 5 DC, 5 HTR. Work 2 HTR in to the last stitch, Sl St to join. 43 sts.

Round 4: Chain 2 and work a HTR in to the same stitch. Work 2 HTR in to each of the next 2 stitches. Work 8 DC, 6 HTR, and then 2 TR in to each of the next 7 stitches. Continue on working round with 6 HTR, 8 DC, 2 HTR in to each of the next 2 stitches, follwed by 1 HTR, 2 HTR in the next stitch, and 1 HTR. Sl St to join. 55 sts. This completes the sole. Do not finish off but chain 1.

Rounds 2 and 3:  Working through both loops as usual, DC 55. Sl St to join at the end of the round. You will now see that the shape of the shoe is beginning to appear. You are now going to continue working rounds but you will start to decrease to form the detail of the shoe.

Round 5: Chain 1. DC 19 then *decrease by working the next 2 stitches together , DC 1.* Repeat from * to * 4 more times. Decrease once more and then DC 16. Sl St to join at the end of the round. 46 sts.

Now with the upper of the shoe facing you, rejoin your yarn ( in contrasting yarn if preferred ) and Sl St all the way around the outer edge of the sole of the shoe, into the unworked part of the stitch from Round 1 of the shoe.

To make the ankle strap:

Chain 41. Starting in the second chain from the hook, DC to the end. Finish off.

With RS facing rejoin your yarn at the beginning of the row and Sl St along to the end. Finish off and sew in the ends.

To finish off the shoe I added a small ribbon bow or a flower. You could also add a small pompom.

To make the flower:

Using small amounts of 4 ply and a 2mm hook.

Make a magic ring and work 7 DC in to the ring.Sl St to join, finish off.

Join in a contrast colour with a Sl St and *chain 5. Starting in the second chain from the hook work back down the chain as follows: Sl St, DC 3, Sl St back in to the same stitch.

Sl St in to the next stitch and repeat from *. Continue around the centre ring until you have 7 petals. Join with a Sl St. Finish off and sew in the ends.

Stitch your finished flower/ribbon/pompom firmly in to place at the front of the shoe.

Make a pair in every colour!
