How to turn a hanging fruit basket into a woven hanging planter | Squirrelly MindsDo you remember seeing this wee little hanging planter from our bedroom makeover? We kept one of those three tiered hanging fruits baskets in storage for years. I suppose I just had the sense that, one day, I knew exactly how to repurpose it. A little bit of spray paint and thick yarn and we’re going to learn how to turn a hanging fruit basket into a woven hanging planter! I totally love it in our bedroom. It adds a bit of texture and greenery which is always a bonus.

How to turn a hanging fruit basket into a woven hanging planter | Squirrelly MindsI must admit though, I had real plants in there and always forgot to water the poor things. Oops! So I had to resort to faux greenery. Definitely not my favourite, but I’m not willing to commit another planticide.

  1. Make sure to thoroughly clean your old fruit basket. Once dry, spray paint and let it dry for at least 24 hours. If you like the colour of yours already then skip this step!
  2. Unhook the baskets from the main chain. Start weaving the basket, working on the flat bottom part first before working your way around the sides. This gets a little finicky, but the key is to keep track of the weaving patter to make sure there’s a steady flow or yarn above and yarn below the wire. Particularly pay attention around the corners.
  3. Reattach the basket to the chain. You can do this to all three baskets or, like mine, just choose one. Either cut off the extra chain or let it sit inside the basket
  4. Place a plant tray in the bottom of the basket, followed by your desired plant. Hang off a ceiling swag hook and you’re good to go!

How to turn a hanging fruit basket into a woven hanging planter | Squirrelly MindsMy original thought with this was to have all three baskets tiered, and I did in fact weave every single one. But once I got them all together, it just looked too overwhelming in our tiny space. But hey, if you’ve got a bright open space that’s begging for a vertical show piece, go to town!
How to turn a hanging fruit basket into a woven hanging planter | Squirrelly MindsI knew that old fruit basket would come in handy. Just do me a favour when you make yours and remember to water your plant…unlike yours truly….*ahem*.
