It’s August and that means my kids are heading back to school in just a few short weeks and I will be able to spend my days crafting and making a bit more with out the constant whining in the background. Yay! To celebrate back to school season and one of my favorite times of the year (school supplies anyone?!) I will be sharing a few easy DIY desk accessories and office supplies with you in the next week or two. First up are these simple but super cute abstract art trinket dishes! I can’t be the only one that loves the color mix in abstract art and because it is abstract, it really is hard to mess up. I’m not an artist by any means, but I can add brushstrokes and dots to a plate!
Acrylic Multi Surface Paint (I used shades of pink, orange, and turquoise plus black)
Paint brushes of various sizes to help you make different sized brush strokes.
Ceramic appetizer plates (I found these square ones at World Market)
Gold Paint Pen optional for the gold border
As far as the tutorial is concerned, just use different colors of paint to create overlapping brushstrokes of various widths. Then add in a few colorful dots and a few clusters of black polka dots and your art is complete. Once the paint is dry, place your plates in a cool oven and heat to 300F and let bake for 30 minutes. Turn off the oven after 30 minutes and let the plates cool in the oven. Once they have cooled, remove them and add the gold edge if you want.
Thats it! Now your trinket dish is ready to hold all your loose office supplies like paper clips, rubber bands, and binder clips.
Not into abstract art? Use the same technique to paint any pattern or design you want!
